Opportunity to help out with a real library program!

This semester, a group of your peers are organising a Fun Palace for QUT Library, and they are looking for people to help out on the day.

This is a great opportunity to get some practical experience with a library program, and you could write this up as a program review if you want. I think it fits best in the making and makerspaces week, so we are willing to accept late submissions for that post if you want to volunteer for the Fun Palace (ie you can submit within a week of the actual event – by the end of Week 10 – rather than in Week 9).

Over to Kirsty for all the deets! Read on for information on how to volunteer!

Throughout the semester Stacey, Frances and I (Kirsty) – with the support of QUT library – have been hard at work putting together a Fun Palace event as part of our project. Fun Palaces are held around the world on the first weekend of October in a variety of locations – libraries, museums, parks, even community pools and streets!

While there are no rules for what a Fun Palace must have, do or be, the main purpose of the event is to try and combine science and the arts in a way that is innovative, engaging and, most of all, accessible to all individuals. The organisation bears the slogan “everyone an artist, everyone a scientist” and we’re hoping to embody that idea as much as possible in our own Fun Palace.

Our Fun Palace event will be held on Sunday, 2nd October (the last day of semester break) at Gardens Point Library and will be running between 10am-3pm, although we’ll need volunteers to help outside of these times for both set-up and pack down.

At this point, we are seeking twelve volunteers to help us out throughout the day by supervising activities – either in a fixed position or on rotation – and encouraging participation, promoting the event and shepherding visitors between activities. There are no set rosters – volunteers are welcome to help out all day or even just a few hours, so as long as they come prepared and enthusiastic.

Volunteering for QUT’s Fun Palace event is a great opportunity to add some hands-on experience to your portfolio or CV, and it’ll also give you an idea of what an industry project entails.

If you’re interested in getting involved, please check our list of activities (see attached) and use the link below to apply:
