Week14: Wrap up & Reflection

Part 1 — My Contribution to Our Learning Community

I feel that I played the role of active learner which brought about positive changes in me according to the learning environment requirements. I think I have been very active and interested to read some of the member’s weekly post to get more information about different topics. Also I was very active in commenting on other’s blog posts and replied when fellow students made comment on my posts. I think that I learnt a lot from my involvement in this unit’s learning community.I made more than 35 comments on my peers’ posts.

Factors that influenced me to comment on posts by my peers were quality of their work the fact these posts gave me relevant and important information about the topic. Secondly a good number of helpful comments positively encouraged my participation in our learning community. The teaching team gave marks rewarding the number of comments and extent of our participation.

The trends in my behaviour were: I did not miss any activity to post to my blog. Whenever the teaching team posted information to write about activities, which were ungraded, I wrote and posted them on my blog without delay. I tried to make at least 2 comments per week and some weeks comments were more than 2.I wrote mostly about topics such as: student information literacy; referencing; library makerspaces; design of community outreach programs; library and information products and services, and also about pop culture.

I think my comments added value to my peer’s blog posts as sometimes I would pose questions about that and related topics. I had a number of active and meaningful participations in numerous different discussions with different member’s blog posts.Being shy by nature in the beginning it was a bit awkward for me to participate in active, robust way in the learning community, however once I got used to the style of interaction. I really enjoyed blogging.

I did need to slightly modify my attitude to try and overcome my instinctively shy behaviour to allow me to fully engage in this unit. I am from a different study and cultural background (Punjab, India). I am now quite comfortable and happy about that change in my behaviour.

Part 2 — My Use of Twitter / Interactions on Twitter

At the start of the semester, it was completely new thing for me to use Twitter. When Twitter chat first started, I just looked at other people’s and the teaching teams Twitter posts. I was not confident to post my answer in Twitter chat but I really appreciated how the teaching team kept posting instruction how to engage with Twitter chat. Now at the end of the semester, I feel like it is not very difficult to chat on Twitter and it is a very interesting way to share our opinions on different topics and know other’s thoughts on that same topic. This is a very engaging and interesting way for me to discuss different questions.

Yes, I did have some concerns about using Twitter as I did not know the #tags. I needed extra help to learn how to post my answers to the Twitter feed. With the extra instruction provided by my great teaching team I learnt how and now I am feeling quiet confident to use it in the future. Now I feel it is very easy.I really enjoyed using Twitter. I am very happy now that I successfully learnt how to engage with Twitter. It is very quick and easy way to discuss any topic and get instant feedback on that topic.I really liked the Twitter chat but unfortunately I was a bit slow off the mark to engage in Twitter chat. This was due to my lack of understanding how to use it the best and most effective way. Now I really do think that Twitter chats aided my learning. The most important thing was that I learnt to use Twitter effectively.

I do not use Twitter much outside the scheduled Twitter chats because most of the time I prefer to use other social media tools such as Facebook and WhatsApp. I do not feel I need to use Twitter often because most of the time I am busy with my study and my work and do not get enough time to engage with the medium. As I found it very interesting way to communicate and discuss things, I’ll definitely use Twitter more in future.Yes, using Twitter in the unit created the confidence in me to use it in future for communicating with my friends and also in my professional / work roles.

Part 3 — My Learnings from this Unit

There are many significant aspects of the teaching and learning in this unit that were very beneficial for me, such as the well-planned teaching and learning activities. Learning material was very well organized and easy to understand. It had detailed description of the assessment tasks. Suggested readings in each week related to each week’s content were very beneficial. They helped me understand the learning material in a more meaningful way. Questions given before the Twitter chat about the topic going to be discussed was really good idea of the teaching team that really helped me lot to think about them and find some relevant material so that can discuss in a better way during the Twitter chat.

The CLA toolkit did not work especially well for me. I tried my best to understand it to make it work for me but it left me confused. I dropped the idea to use it and also there was a lot to do on the blog. I wanted to concentrate on that blog to my best rather than losing my concentration and wasting time on the other things which I think I need to learn first and then starting use them.

I really found the assessment to be a very useful learning path for me. In assessment item one, everyone gave different opinions and thoughts about the same topic. This was a good learning experience, one that enhanced my knowledge of each of the set topics.

Part 4 — Reflections on the Quality of My Work

The quality of my work in this unit has been quite good. I put in a lot of effort to submit good and effective assessment pieces of work. I wanted to get good marks overall. But when I went through other student’s blogs and saw their work, commitment and participation then I realized that I need to improve. Their work in each blog post was really good the way they used critical evaluation techniques.

I felt that I did quite well in the grant application proposal. I do think that I need to better develop my English reading comprehension so I can better absorb extra material related to posts. For that to happen I need to manage my time a little more effectively.

The strengths of my work in this unit were: I posted on each activity (on time and that critically evaluated posts). My weaknesses were: Sometimes I wanted to ask different questions about weekly activities and other content and I just remained hesitant and could not make communication the way it should be.

Pop Culture and Week 13 twitter chat

This week -twitter chat was about pop culture and I was excited to know more about the pop culture. I found many great answers by different chat members and in this post I would like to reflect on those different opinions.

The twitter chat was started with the question about GLAM. Most of the members had different opinions about the role of library as cultural institution. It was agreeable that libraries should provide services that suit to all types of users. To support in a better way libraries can play effective role to support different aspect of GLAM as libraries are providing cultural development in community, organizing cultural programs and culture related material.

Everyone revealed different words about “pop culture”. But some of them had similar opinions about first word in their mind but other had different.

It is important to know, what is pop culture? I surprised with different responses that i did not expect. One response was, it is a kind of high culture. Some think that it is related to graphic novels, comic books and popular books where as other respond that it is more about movies, music, TV series, star wars, games, consumer culture, bright colours and disposable datable. There is difference between the opinions of people about the pop culture.

It was very interesting question about the big trends in pop culture at present. There is difference in the opinions of twitter chat members as some of them believe that 3D printing, gamification, youtube gaming are the top big trends in the pop culture. But other said that makerspaces, comic con festivals, cosplay, fan fiction, adult colouring books, bottle flipping, VP are most current trends. It is all about which activity interest them most. Following twitter chat discussion responses makes it clear.

To support and capitalize on these trends libraries can provide information literacy skills training to users to assist them accessing required information of different activites in the libraries and to participate effectively in those activities.

To bring users into the library, libraries can play important role to attract them by using pop culture in an effective and positive way. It will leads users interest more into the library. As we all know that in the present time users want safe and comfortable spaces into the library and libraries appropriate and relevant actions and efforts can develop pop culture in a good way and it can change people perception about the libraries.

Zines play an important role in school teaching and library collections and references. Zines are reference sources and needs authority evaluation as assumed by different twitter chat members. After the discussion about zines, i came to know zines are important part of library collection. But in current library environment, zines have less important than other library sources. But there should not be a question that zines somehow play a significant part to bring uncensored and original material into library collections as discussed in the twitter chat.

screen-shot-2016-10-30-at-10-15-52-am screen-shot-2016-10-30-at-10-15-15-am

Overall, twitter chat aboout pop culture into the library increase our knowledge about the importance of pop culture into the library. It was very fruitful chat ever that gave me lots of new information of different aspects of pop culture.

Week 12: Children and Teens

Following our week 12 Twitter chat on children and teens, it is my personal opinion that problems with the unattended kids in the library and point of school holiday programs in the library are the two most important questions discussed in the twitter chat. An unattended kid in the library is an issue where as school holiday events in the library is a program. So both are different question and I decided to write and talk about these given questions by teaching team.

It is right to say that unattended kids can be noisy and can create problems in the library but on the other hand if parents supervise them the way it should be, they can be a good kids while staying in the library. I fully agree with Kate that kids are people too and library is a place where an opportunity can be provided to them to develop confidence in them to make them independence.

If it is an issue that sometime kids misbehave in the library and noisy may they do not find it interesting and get bored and started being noisy and undisciplined.

Being part of the user community, there should be some interesting events libraries should organized for them to make them busy and calm in the library but those events should include the learning element which can develop kids learning about different things. Sometime they like to learn in the group rather than teaching the individually. Public library Ontario provides kids those resources that are appropriate according to their level, age and needs. I think it will be best opportunity for the kids to use resources that interests them and give them positive experience of using library services and library resources. Library staff need to understand their needs and provide them best possible resources to help them develop better way.

Secondly, School holiday program and events in the library provide the kids an opportunity to spend their holidays to create and invent the things by sharing opinions with each other. In my opinion, maker spaces are the best community gathering in the public libraries that provide them the equipment to create, invent and manufacture items that are hard for the common people to buy or afford such as 3-D printers and other computer stuff and different software. Parents too like to bring their kids in the library in the days of school holidays and want them to take part in different events organized by the libraries.

As discussed in the twitter chat, there is positive outcome of these events and programs that leads to encourage the interest of parents and kids in the library programs.

It is true that these programs are also good for those kids who do not get to the daycare. This program can be a fun, learning for the kids without paying any money to anyone. In the end, for unattended kids there should be the provision of appropriate supervision to avoid any danger and risk to them. Point of school holidays program is good to create the interest of kids in the library and help them to spend their time in a good and productive way.

Week 11: Research Support Activity

Research support plays an important role in the academic learning of the students. There are a number of research services provided by the different academic and special libraries described as managing data, open access and so on libraries need to be more proactive to make these services more beneficial for the researchers and the library services as well.

There is close connection between the researchers and research support libraries as research support librarians assist researchers in managing data, open access and institutional repositories. To make the research support more beneficial for the researchers research support librarians help to update and develop skillset for the researcher to make them more successful to access their required information easily and in an effective way. This research support by the librarians assist in the development of the researchers. But to make research support more effective, it is very important for the research support librarians to understand the needs of the researchers in a better way.

As discussed in the twitter chat, subject specialization is essential to provide good reference services and research assistance as well.To assist in research grant and application, also an important function done by the reference and academic librarians is to uplift the libraries and the services. Researchers assist to increase the importance of the libraries and strong library service culture that leads to successfully satisfy researchers needs and enhance an esteem of the library among other users.

To assist researchers, most of the libraries in Australia provide comprehensive assistance to them that include services like online tutorials, one to one consultation, training and advice and ALLS and ask a librarian and individual support sessions.Technological advancement in the academic learning environment leads to change information needs and wants of the library users. There is need for the librarians and research support services to adapt themselves accordingly to satisfy users. To provide easy access to the researchers to seek information about their required needs, it is very important for the librarians to identify the needs of the researchers.

For providing good research support to the researchers many libraries have been moved from traditional to modern libraries to provide modern services and also offering expert knowledge as an enquiry desk. This way most of the libraries are trying to fulfill the needs of different segments of the users. On the other hand, if we expect academic and reference librarians to support researchers in different ways, also there is a need to identify the skills that are required training for the librarians. By identifying those skills, training and information literacy can be given to librarians to assist them getting those skills according to the ways it should be.This training should be there for both of those who just entered in the profession and also for those who are already working in that profession.

To sum up, it can be said that research support is proving very beneficial for researchers to get good output of their work and providing easy access to the information that making their research more productive.

Week 9: Critical Reflectin Activity

Maker spaces are the spaces where people from the community who have same sought of interest gather to create, share, invent and learn about new things. Academic libraries or public libraries are the most common places where makers spaces are organizes. In the 21st century, the academic library can be seen as laboratory or making space that can inspire and stimulate creativity within the scholarly community.

Public and academic libraries are the most popular spaces for maker spaces in the community. Public and academic libraries encourage local community and provide effective engaging environment to them to promote and share information and ideas to create new things. Making spaces are fun, can be affordable, and provide an opportunity for library employees to engage with each other, as well as with patrons. Also, this is a good opportunity for the library staff to share ideas and information to each other and different people from the community gather in the library. It leads to develop good relationship between library staff and people in the community and increase people interest in events conducted by the libraries.

Chermside public library organizes many maker space events to provide appropriate environment for the maker space to the local community. In the school holidays, Libray provides a heaps of activity to the community or the different ages groups with many extra programs. Most of the maker space events are about the different craft activities.

Making activities get patrons in the library doors but can also encourage partnerships and cross-disciplinary collaboration across campuses. These activities encourage children and people of different disciplines and ages to participate in creative activities and share ideas and experiences with others. Also, it attract people to come to the library and learn the things which are not possible to learn in a better way anywhere else and free of cost.

The makerspace events in the public, academic and school libraries increase the importance of the libraries among children, parents and the local community. By participating in the makerspaces, people come to know that they do not need any specific skills for it. Rather they lean new skills to make or create different things from others (Bagley, 2014). It provides people the skills to create and invent things at home and increase interaction between their families.

It provides people the skills to create and invent things at home and increase interaction between their families. Maximum engagements of people in the libraries assist libraries to improve their services and effect positively in the community (Lotts, 2015). Also, it increases the importance of the libraries in the life of the people. In some libraries, there are makerspaces events related to technology skills. Libraries assist people to learn to use technology and introduce techniques how can people use it an effective way. Librarians have to be fearless in implementing technology, willing to learn on their feet, and be excited to explore so that they can introduce it in a way, it should be.

To sum up, it can be said that makerspaces need some amount of money for the creation and monitoring as well. There should be a provision of funding money to the makerspaces so that it can continue its work and keep assisting people to interact and share their ideas. Also, financial assistance to makerspaces helps them to keep their existence in the community.

Week 7: Critical Reflection Activity (Information and Digital literacy)

Information and digital literacy paly an important role in the academic learning process of students across regions and cultures. But before going deep into it, it is very essential to understand, what is information and digital literacy? Although it is not an easy to give complete definition of information and digital literacy.Information literacy can be described as systematic information behaviour.

However, Information literacy is knowing how to find, evaluate, use and manage information. It is part of lifelong learning and an important skill for all students. Digital literacy is how to find, organise, evaluate and create information using digital technology. LSE recognise that both digital and information literacy are of paramount importance in learning, teaching and research and essential skills for students and staff. “Information literacy is a natural extension of the concept of literacy in our information society, and information literacy education is the catalyst required to transform the information society of today into the learning society of tomorrow” (Bruce, 2004, p.1).To ensure students engagement in different learning activities in current ICT atmosphere, there is need of effective information practices and well effective use of information. So it is important to develop information and digital literacy skills among students and staff.

As we are living in the postmodern era and the world has become a global village. It is very important to stay on track with the emerging needs of the digital world. In addition, in the academic field, students and staff need to have information and digital literacy skills to access various information sources to fulfill their academic needs. Also too, Ease of the computer made it very easy for students and staff to seek information from different electronic sources. But sometime librarian cannot help the students the way it should be.”Australian librarians from a variety of sectors revealed that they agreed that their profession was getting more complex and that they were responsible for their own continuing professional development”(parker, 2012,p.6). But for many international students  librarians at QUT are assisting as much as they can.

My journey of studying at QUT was bit challenging for me as I am from a totally different study culture. I did use the library in my university back at home but mostly I used physical resources there. But here at QUT everything is online and I am from a non-IT background. That’s the reason I find it hard to access different resources. But Hats off to the QUT librarian, IT help desk, Stimulate services, Study solution and ALLS for the way they all help me. Whenever I got stuck in my study and other academic needs they helped me lot.

Librarians taught me to use different search strategies to access various e-sources. Stimulate services are the best way to learn about databases and creating different queries from your class fellows a free and enjoyable environment. I have been there many times and I really appreciate QUT students who teach me and create confidence in myself about how to learn better in stress free environment. I wish I could make the video at stimulate services to show my family and friends back in my home country how Aussie students study in a very interesting way and help other international students to learn in a better way. Now I have become a big fan of QUT Aussie students and staff and hats off to you guys for the way you help me to inculcate self-confidence in myself. You guys make the impossible possible for me.

However, academic librarians need to act as a guide to support student search and build up their understanding of information literacy skills to fulfill their current needs(Parker, 2012). Also too, effective communication about information literacy skills will lead to appropriate curriculum design ,evaluation, staff development and student assessment.

Week 6: Critical Reflection Activity

There are many reader advisory services available to help people to choose, access and find different reading material. But before we go deep into it, its important to know what is reader advisory.

“Readers’ advisory is identified as a public library service in the Standards and Guidelines for Australian Public Libraries, with ‘promoting the value of reading’ listed in various strategic documents as a key practice.”

In my opinion, important point discussed in the twitter chat was the role of real library advisory services and online advisory services in the life of adults or students. As it was clear that some of the participants were in favor of advisory services available in the real library and other think that online advisory services or social media, e-newsletters and blogs are the important services to assist adult to access information and fulfill academic requirements. But Many librarians perceive that changes in the makeup of library staff are harming RA service. Many librarians now are not readers, their colleagues say, or at least don’t read widely enough to become expert readers’ advisors(Verma & schwart, 2014, para8).However, I think discussion with the library and ask a librarian is the best way to promote reading as well as lifelong learning experience. To go to the library personally or physically gives much more learning about reading literacy than go through online advisory service. Currently, most of the librarian got various reader literacy skills and able to assist users according to their emerging needs of reading literacy. Sometime, it is hard to find the reading sources, we really want to read but due to the lack of reading literacy skills, readers cannot find those sources, they need.

There are many online reader advisory services like amazon and goggle reader advisory etc available. Also too, Ease of accessing these services attracts the adults to use them to help find good reading material. But these services hardly teach the adults and readers the reader literacy skills, which they really need to learn. However, they do not really answer the questions of user that they want to get answers. Whereas, In real library and librarian are very professional and trained in the modern libraries. In my personal experience, I gone through many online advisory services but I never had been satisfied. Finally I went to the QUT library and public library near my house. Librarians at the QUT library are very trained and have new technology skills to access different online, e-sources and catalogue. Once, I went to ask them about search strategies to search in databases and goggle, first the librarian ask me, how is my study going on? I really like the way they made students relax. Then he taught me, how to use different search strategies to get good results of search. Also, it promotes and creates good relationship between adult students and librarian and inculcates students interest in library services. Before going there, I search lot on goggle to search with search strategies but I was unsuccessful.

Therefore, It is important for the librarian to keep update training of new technology skills and teach readers how to access the reading material by using skills taught by them to support personal advisory services.

Week 5: Designing programs, products and services

In the speed date with design thinking activity, I think training of information literacy skills assist Belinda’s need of accessing different information sources and help her to learn about effective search skills. Support and training of search skills will improve her ways of seeking information.

To save time and easy access to information, Belinda needs training and guidance of search strategies and databases. My opinion is information literacy skill training and supports her lot to learn about accessing information from various sources as she is mature students and do not have enough skills to seek information from different e-sources.

The librarian gives information literacy skill training in university library or she can watch videos of information literacy skills on you tube. Also, Belinda can chat online with the librarian on “Ask a librarian service”. They will show Belinda different examples to search in different ways. She can start searching according to her level and once she got experienced, she can go further. In addition, librarian will have instant chat online service to answer the questions of students and ready to find the solution of the problem and help to improve and refine the search.

It is important that there should be effective design interface for the ease of information access of students who have lack of technology skills.

Week 3 : Critical Reflection activity (Reference)

In my opinion as a student –The term ‘reference’ play an important role to seek relevant academic information from different library sources. But most of us do not understand what it is and what types of information we can get from it.

I personally believe that reference librarian provides me lot of relevant information from time to time regarding my academic needs. But currently, Different job tiltles are using in various librarian services. There is no usage of actual word of ‘reference’ in libraries these days. For instance, In QUT library, there is Library help desk which is proving very beneficial for me and lots of other students to ask about different search strategies, reference styles and other searches.

Instead, library have many other online services like ask a librarian, cite write or chat online to assist students about their topics of search and reference need to cite correctly. All these changes due to the evolution and technological advancement like computerization and digitization of the libraries. Everyone has a hectic life in the post modern era and they want to go for quick and time saving things and this is same in the case of students. They want to access library sources by sitting at home and prefer to go to the library in the evening when they get free time.

However, Librarian must need to adapt themselves according to the needs of current user and be ready to help them in different ways. Reference librarian needs information literacy skills to access electronic sources from the library and should find out the barriers of user access to library sources and give them training to access those sources quickly.

“Change is the law of nature” and librarian too needs to accept those changes and learn things to help their user needs. On the contrary, Adaptation of librarians according to new academic and working environment is not going the change the meaning of reference in current scenario. It is merely the understanding of new environment and delivery of services according to the requirements of modern library user.

Information literacy is the primary need of current library user. As we know that, As we know that, ease of accessing library sources attract library user seek information from e-sources. But most of the user are not familiar with using e-sources and seek correct information. In this case, librarian can assist them to guide them how to use these sources and get correct information from these sources. In addition, librarian can help user to learn information literacy skills if they have these skills.

There is close relationship between information literacy and reference work. For example, In QUT library at library helpdesk every many students ask questions about different searches and how to cite their work correctly which leads them to aware to always cite work of others and escape them from pilagrim. Library help desk still answering their each questions and the teach them about accessing different sources and databases. How can we deny the importance of reference librarian in students life. I think they are the back bone of many international students to teach them and make them successful in their academic work and different search techniques and cite work correctly. I really appreciate reference librarian.

Week 2 : Critical reflection Activity

Screen Shot 2016-08-07 at 12.13.03 pm

To involve in communities provide us the opportunity to explore on different topics and share thoughts and ideas as much as we can. It is the golden chance to learn from each other and leads to develop strong and healthy relationships. But before discussing it, we need to understand what communities are? Different authors have given their opinion about the meaning of the communities. Active engagement in the community helps to share the knowledge and information in the interesting way and answer various questions.

To make communities more successful, effective and quick communication is a powerful tool to make it happen. I believe to behave positively in community environments. Our natural way to behave in different community environments affected by family and social environment and the country where we born. While interacting in online and offline communities, I would like to accept the right thoughts and opinion on the topic of interest and can disagree with those ideas that I think are not acceptable in community environment. In IFN 614 learning community, I would like to be supportive where I think my friends stuck in achieving academic goal. Also, I would like to have a kind of profile to learn from others and participate actively and interestingly.

In reaching several answers of different topics in IFN614, I would like to have a role of active learner and will engage actively in online and offline learning environment to get and reach a range of different information from teachers and class fellows. Better engagement and active involvement in the learning environments always leads to success to achieve academic goal. Continuous and effective communication between teachers and students always assist to address issues and concerns on time and develop good relation to make learning better. I know by playing a active role in both the communities, I can learn new skills, advance my knowledge and give me a sense of pride as well.

The modification of instinct behavior is necessary for me if I want to participate effectively and positively in the IFN614 learning community according to its requirements. I believe, I cannot behave in this community the way I does behave in other volunteer communities in my personal life. It’ll benefit my learning and study to behave in this learning community the ways other students behaving to make learning successful.

It will not be too difficult for me to change behave according to the learning environment of this unit because it will support and increase my learning if I behave the way other students and teaching team doing to enhance learning. I’ll be more than happy to change behave if I am learning new and good things from teachers and fellow students. As it is said that “change is the law of nature” and I do not mind to bring changes in myself according to the need of my learning in this semester.

However, these are certain characteristics that I determine to have in myself to behave in the learning community during this semester to act effectively and purposefully.

Twitter and Me

Screen Shot 2016-08-07 at 11.12.27 am

It would be great to use a twitter in this semester. Always, I want to learn and experience new things. Twitter tools and best practices provide us the opportunity to share important news and files, photos and videos anyone sitting any part of the world. Twitter is new for me. I am very excited about successfully creating a new twitter account and following teachers and classmates. Twitter is proving very helpful for me because every time different tweets give new information about important topics.

About using twitter, I am bit concern to use my own photo as a profile picture because sometime wrong people can download photos and use them for wrong purposes, which can be big trouble later on. Secondly, I do not want to be too public on the twitter and unknown public comments on my posts. Twitter has a bright side that leads to catch up with friends, family and relatives in hectic life. I am sure once I get used to it, Definitely, I’ll like using it. It provides the access to important information and if we have any doubts, I can ask the question, I really like this thing.

To participate in twitter chats would be great to share own ideas and get other opinion on the same topic. It’ll help to introduce new prospects and increase knowledge about different topics. I would like to say; to use a twitter account in this semester will provide many opportunities to learn new things.
