Our places – a quote from David Carr

I just love this quote from Professor David Carr (who unfortunately passed away earlier this year), the beginning quote from his book Open Conversations: Public Learning in Libraries and Museums so I thought I would share it here – it’s a great thing to keep in mind…

“Our places, being the kinds of places they are, will be defined not by what they contain, but by what they begin, evaluated by what they inspire, and not by what they complete. They invite and incite the longing and wanting, the close and hidden need, the desire carried by learners who hope to become something more. They are engaged and charged by things unseen, ideas unspoken, inventions that have not happened yet. That is, stories not yet created to rescue and console us.”

This is a great quote- it definitely sums up everything a library should be!
